Regional Forum

THE SENATE
The Senate is the academic authority of the University and currently has over 1,000 members including inter alia all central and regional academic staff, together with representatives of part-time staff and students. It is chaired by the Vice Chancellor, meets three times a year and controls the University's academic programme, regulates its examinations and course of study and promulgates its Degrees and Regulations subject to the confirmation of the Council.


The student representation on Senate comprises:
i) One representative from each region appointed on a rotational basis by the appropriate Regional Electoral Committee
ii) Five officers of the Association ex officio
iii) The Chair or Deputy Chair (whichever is the student) of the Central Consultative Committee ex officio
iv) Four students appointed by the Executive Committee
v) The Chair of the Postgraduate Students Consultative Committee ex officio and four post- graduate research students, 2 internal and 2 external
vi) Student representatives on certain key committees


Senate meetings are mid week at Walton Hall. Travel and other essential expenses are met by the OU.

Elections
1. The election is for the student member from this region under category i) above, and carries ex officio membership of your Regional Consultative Committee.
2. The Regional Electoral Committee comprises all branch officers, that is secretary, chair and treasurer, from the region in which the vacancy exists.
3. The period of office commences on 1 September and runs until 31 August
4. A nominee may be deemed eligible for appointment provided he/she is a registered student within the University and registered for a course or a higher degree, within the present or immediately preceding academic year.
5. The Returning Officer for the election will be the General Manager, OUSA. A Deputy Returning Officer may be appointed.
